Technical deep-dive · The No-Briner

How the No-Briner eliminates brine at the source.

Most plants manage brine. The No-Briner is engineered so that no reject stream is ever produced. Here is how a brackish inland stream — 5,000 to 50,000 mg/L TDS — leaves the site as nothing but clean water and pure fertilizer, with no concentrate left behind.

The mechanism

How the No-Briner works, step by step

Five stages carry inland brackish water from intake to finished product without ever forming a concentrate to dispose of.

Characterize the stream

The full-panel water report fixes the chemistry — TDS, scaling species and the salts in solution. This sets the recovery targets and the configuration of every downstream stage so nothing is left over.

Pre-condition & protect

Suspended solids, hardness and scale-formers are removed up front so the recovery stages run fouling-free — the failure mode that forces conventional plants to bleed off a brine stream.

Drive recovery past the RO wall

Staged separation pushes water recovery beyond the point where conventional RO stalls — recovering nearly all the water instead of stopping and rejecting the rest as concentrate.

Convert the salts to solids

Rather than concentrating the remaining dissolved solids into a liquid brine, the No-Briner separates them out as solid, recoverable material — there is no liquid reject to pond or haul.

Finish water & fertilizer

The recovered water is polished to clean-water spec and the recovered solids are finished into farm-grade fertilizer — two saleable outputs, zero waste output.

Confirm zero discharge

The site mass-balance closes on water and fertilizer alone. With no brine stream in the balance, operation is true zero-liquid-discharge — by design, not by approximation.

What it means for your site

Why operators choose the No-Briner

Eliminating the reject stream doesn't just remove a cost — it removes an entire category of risk and obligation.

Nothing to dispose of

No brine means no ponds, liners, hauling or injection — the disposal program disappears from the operating model.

Permit risk removed

You can't be exposed to a brine-discharge permit you never need. The biggest inland regulatory fragility is gone.

More water recovered

Recovery runs past the conventional wall — 99%+ of the stream returns as clean water instead of being rejected.

Salts become fertilizer

The solids that would have been brine are finished into farm-grade fertilizer that Desalus refines and sells — which is what lets Desalus keep your clean-water rate low.

Land reclaimed

Acreage that would have gone to evaporation ponds stays productive, and the footprint never grows over time.

Operated as a service

Desalus capitalizes, configures, runs and optimizes the No-Briner around your exact water — you simply buy back the clean water it produces.

How can there be no brine at all?

Because the salts are never concentrated into a liquid reject. The No-Briner pushes water recovery past the conventional wall and converts the remaining dissolved solids directly into recoverable solid material that is finished as fertilizer — so no liquid concentrate ever forms.

Doesn't pushing recovery that high cause scaling?

That's why pre-conditioning comes first. Removing scale-formers and hardness up front is precisely what lets recovery run past the point where conventional plants would foul and be forced to reject a brine bleed.

What leaves the site?

Only two things: clean water and farm-grade fertilizer. The mass balance closes on those alone — there is no third waste stream to truck, pond or inject.

How do I get numbers for my site?

Send Desalus your full-panel water quality and volume report. You'll receive a site-specific model of recovery, your clean-water rate per thousand gallons, and the brine-disposal and capital costs you eliminate.
